StyleAthleisure
We see it everywhere. It’s the new cool. It looks comfy, it feels comfy and it’s proudly sporty. This trend is aptly called Athleisure, a concatenation of the words ‘Athletic’ and ‘Leisure’. It’s a trend that’s all about wearing athletic, sporty, gym clothes everywhere. That’s everywhere without exception. There’s athleisure for work and athleisure for nights on the town. There’s plenty of athleisure street wear and naturally, there’s athleisure for casual days and staycations.
This trend is about wearing functional and comfortable clothes that echo a healthy lifestyle. The rise of Athleisure is a direct result of the growing popularity of healthy living. [READ MORE] This lifestyle dimension is probably what has lent athleisure its staying power. We live healthy to stay healthy and having this lifestyle choice reflect in how we dress is something many of us appreciate.
Athleisure emerged a while ago and has continued to grow strong. It has so many things going for it and it may well last a few more seasons. For starters, it strikes a universal chord, appealing to people of all sexes and all ages. This isn’t just about comfort and functionality. Athleisure really looks good on everyone.
Secondly, it affirms a very positive lifestyle. People who have made healthy living a priority want to act the part and look the part. Looking the part might even encourage some to act the part. I wonder how many have taken up pilates, biking, yoga or running because they had cool, colourful clothes that made them look good and feel good while exercising.
Finally, going by the investments and projections of brands like Nike, Adidas and Lululemon, the women’s side of this trend is very lucrative indeed. Just ask Queen Bey whose athleisure brand has been doing quite well in Europe (all things considered).
Some may still wonder how athleisure can offer the styling variety many want from fashion trends these days. The things that come to mind when many of us think of sporty clothes are tracksuits and amorphous sweatshirts. Banish those thoughts now. In this post, I share 10 essentials for an athleisure wardrobe that’s versatile, stylish and true to its name.
Flats
——————————-
The most interesting shoes of the season are neither pumps nor chunky heeled shoes. Stylish flats are having a major fashion moment. They’re comfortable (per usual) and oh so stylish. Between classic ballet flats, D’orsay type flats and Ladies’ oxford flats, there are many ways for you to make a very personal style statement that’s true to the ethos of athleisure.
Sneakers & Canvas Shoes
——————————-
These are your go-to shoes for a seriously sporty athleisure look. Wear them with anything and everything. They’re comfy & they’re cool!
The Tracksuit
——————————-
The tracksuit is classic sporting gear. It’s usually comfy and warm. But athleisure isn’t about wearing full sporting gear. It’s about adapting sporting gear for everyday and everywhere use. So as Avery Matera suggests in her article for Glamour, it’s better to ‘breakup’ your tracksuit gear and wear them as separates, pairing them with other stylish and athleisurely pieces. (Think t-shirts, cropped tops, jeggings, leggings, etc).
The Jumpsuit
——————————-
Ah yes! There’s a strong athleisure twist to the onesies trend that emerged last year. This year, they’re not only made of the most comfortable fabrics, they’re also structured to accommodate a more active, everyday lifestyle.
Fitbits & Co
——————————-
The fitbit is quintessential athleisure gear. It represents our desire to not only look the part but act & live the part. Fitbits are designed to track vital signs (Heartbeat) and measure activity rates like distance covered and calories burned.
In an interesting union of fashion, lifestyle and tech, there are many sleek, seamless fitbits and gorgeous fitbit cases to match, designed by the likes of Tory Burch and Michael Kors. Haute fashion fitbits are also out there for people who can afford them.
Comfy Skirts & Dresses
——————————-
In order for clothes to be comfortable a la athleisure, they must be made of the right fabrics. That means cotton, cashmere, wool, jersey and their combinations. These and other cutting edge fabrics are enjoying the limelight thanks to this trend. And, they’re increasingly used to make skirts and stylish sheath dresses that let women wear athleisure looks to their offices and boardrooms without breaking any dresscodes.
Leggings & Jeggings
——————————-
The global rise of leggings and jeggings was probably a herald of the full mode athleisure we’re witnessing today. While this trend seems to have passed its peak, it’s still very relevant.
Sporty Jackets
——————————-
The athleisure trend would not be complete without a suite of outerwear options to match. If you love jackets like I do, you’ll appreciate these athleisurely options. They range from casual to polished and can take you anywhere you want to go. Try a sleek bomber jacket or cropped jacket for a befitting work look and a stylish varsity jacket for more casual occasions.
Backpacks & Crossbody Bags
——————————-
If you’re seriously into athleisure, you’ve got to get some bags to match. Your crossbody bags from one or two seasons ago are still on trend. You might also want to get a chic backpack as they are the athleisure bags of the moment!
Facecaps & Fedoras
——————————-
Finally, cap it off! Athleisure means not having to obsess about good & bad hair days. It means neat, practical dos like ponytails, braids and cornrows. And, it means throwing on a facecap or Fedora once in a while just because.
