ColourThe Classic Monochrome
The classic monochrome is a big colour trend this season. And why wouldn’t it be? With some variation in style and pattern, this combo can be anything you want it to be: Retro, Vintage, Classic, Modern, Avant Garde, Futuristic, – you name it!
Very much related to its resurgence is the growing trendiness of all black and all white ensembles, which has also reached a peak this season. No longer seen as exclusively Gothic or Pristine (divine) respectively, they are the new cool, evoking minimalist sophistication and uber comfort a la Athleisure.
Though popular, donning all black or all white can be tricky. Wearing the classic monochrome combo is one way to get your fix of black and white in ideal proportions.
There are so many ways to wear black and white. Each pattern below gives a different feel to the classic monochrome. I love them all and if you’re honest, you’ll admit you love them too. Take a look!
Monochrome stripes are fab. Last year, Breton stripes (traditionally blue and white) were all the rage. Truth be told however, all stripes are in especially if they’re monochrome.
This pattern from the family of plaids is a very chic way to do the monochrome. The Gingham midi-skirt is quite a hit these days as it evokes the feminine elegance of mid 20th century fashion.
Polka Dots look and feel like fun. This adorable, whimsical pattern is especially attractive in black and white. From my explorations on Pinterest and Polyvore, it really does seem that the bigger the dots, the better!
The houndstooth pattern in monochrome simply exudes sophistication. Anything touched by this intricate Scottish pattern (in its traditional black and white) becomes a classic!
Chevron has been trending in fashion and design at large for a few years now. In spring 2015, colourful chevron patterns were a big deal. This Spring, monochrome chevron is the thing!
Considered a staple of posh boarding school uniforms and classic Brit style, the Tartan Plaid is a fab way to go monochrome. For starters, it never goes out of style. It has character, class and the right touch of preppy chic to keep us coming back for more.
The colour block trend is a very modern way to do the monochrome. It’s also easy to pull off with separates or single pieces.
As the floral (and botanical) trend endures for another season, monochrome florals have become a fashion item. The vintage dress below is a great example of how gorgeous monochrome florals can be.
Whether you consider them artsy or inscrutable, abstract prints in black and white are both modern and sophisticated. That’s not to say they can’t be fun. As the skater skirt below shows, abstract prints can be versatile.
Ombre’s soft blending of colours makes for a very striking monochrome look. By playing with the many shades of gray between black and white, ombre can be a colourful way to do the monochrome.
