Jewellery StyleWe ♥ Beads
Seeing is believing! Simply saying that most women love beaded jewellery would be stating the obvious. The signs are everywhere, especially in our trinket boxes. Knowing ‘Why’ helps us understand why this trend is here to stay. Here are 5 reasons why we love beads.
The Golden Days
It’s important to put the current trend into perspective. Beaded jewellery have been around for quite some time. Here in Nigeria, beads are a part of our history and culture. This is also true for many peoples around the world.
I like to think of this trend as a general renaissance; a return to the chunky jewellery, large pendants, Opera Necklaces and Lariats that were popular in the 70’s.
So, while some of us are sentimentally attached to beads because they remind us of our youth, others revel in the accessorizing variety they make possible.
Gimme Colour
Yes….. Colour is in. Look around and you will find fabulous shades of blue, purple, fawn, fuchsia (a favourite here at HMJServices), etc. Add to this our love for patterned Ankara, Adire and Brocade, and it comes as no surprise that we have embraced this jewellery trend with gusto!!
Beads, with their naturally vibrant colours, mixed hues and innate luster complement our local styles easily. This ease and the promise of endless variety are qualities all women can appreciate.
Shake it!
An important element of fashionable jewellery is ‘Movement and Drop’. Popular styles like Chandelier Earrings, Hoops, Drop Earrings and Stilletto Earrings, echo the wearer’s moves with jiggles and elegant swings. Lets not forget elaborate layered necklaces of all lengths.
Beads are perfect for crafting jewellery with ‘Movement and Drop’. Infact, this is one of the reasons I was inspired to start this business. With striking shapes that hang with poise and the voluminous effect they have when assembled in numbers, beads are so important that contemporary jewellery is not quite itself without them.
Custom-Made
This is arguably the strongest attraction for Nigerian Ladies. Indeed, the ‘custom-made’ sub-trend is booming here in Abuja and is a tribute to how much we value having what we want, when we want it, how we want it.
The accessibility and workability of modern beads have made this possible. Personalized design means more women have the opportunity to realize their own visions of style and beauty. In fashion, this is as good as it gets!!
More With Less
I think this point means a lot in these times of economic uncertainty. Beaded jewellery afford women the luxury of accessorizing stylishly for relatively less cash.
It is true that some beads are made of expensive gems (like Sapphire, Onyx, Opal, Some kinds of Quartz and some kinds of pearl). However, there are affordable types which have variety and character.
Beads of Pearl, Glass, Citrine, Chalcedony, Jasper, Howlite, to name a few, are common here in Abuja and have been used to create jewelry of amazing beauty.
Glass beads are particularly interesting. Whether in seed or medium sizes, they are often used to create jewelry with very detailed pattern and design. In such pieces, it is easy to see that the value of the finished product far exceeds the worth of materials used.
